The Cedar Rapids River Kings and the Boys & Girls Club of Cedar Rapids has announced a new community partnership for the 2019 IFL season.

The partnership will entail the creation of the first youth indoor football league made up of five teams: Southside Saints, Polk Panthers, Olivet Oilers, Taylor Texans, and the Little Kings. Rosters will be comprised exclusively of Boys & Girls Club members.

“The Boys and Girls Club is very excited to go into this amazing partnership with the River Kings, many of our club members aspire to be athletes,” said Boys & Girls Club Director of Programming & Outreach Lori Ampey. “Through this opportunity will come great responsibility and accountability. There are going to be many facets to the league and this new team [River Kings] is ready to show their commitment to the community.”

The league will begin mandatory practices (one per week) on January 23, 2019, leading up to a five-week program consisting of a league-wide camp on Saturday, February 23 and then four weeks of games taking place on River Kings home game days on March 9, 15, 30, and April 20.

Practices will be held at various Boys & Girls Club locations. The league-wide camp will take place at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids on the River Kings field before general doors (5:00-5:45 p.m.) and then each week four teams will also be scheduled to play their games at the arena on a rotational basis.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to highlight the positive steps we are taking as an organization than to kick off the 2019 season with the Boys & Girls Club,” said River Kings General Manager Ryan Eucker. “Though our players strive to serve as role models in our community, I think we all know that the Boys & Girls Club athletes are truly the inspirational ones.”

The program is available to grades 3-5 and will conclude with a Jr. River King Bowl at the end of the season. During the program, educational and behavior guidelines will be in place along with opportunities for the athletes to eat pre-game meals with the River Kings players on game days. Boys & Girls Club athletes will also participate in live media interviews on the radio, meet & greet events with the public, and even have football cards to autograph during the season.

Registration fees are waived by the Boys & Girls Club and the Cedar Rapids River Kings. Boys & Girls Club members seeking to participate in the program can register by contacting Lori Ampey by email at lampeybgc@live.com or by calling 319-350-3759.

Group ticket discounts will be available to Boys & Girls Club athletes’ families that wish to attend the games at the U.S. Cellular Center and then stay for the River Kings game. Information on how to purchase tickets will be distributed before the start of the season and following the registration process. Boys & Girls Club athletes will receive a complimentary ticket to the River Kings game following their schedule game nights at the U.S. Cellular Center.
